ABOUT US
Our Mission
At Befriend Motherwell, our mission is simple yet vital: to reduce the impact of loneliness and social isolation among older adults in Motherwell through companionship, connection, and community.
We believe that no one in our local area should feel alone as they grow older. By providing reliable, friendly connections, we help older adults stay engaged, valued, and connected to the community around them.
How We Started
Befriend Motherwell was founded in 2010 by Dalziel St. Andrew’s Church, following a generous legacy left to the congregation by Catherine Thomson—a lady from New Zealand who wanted her gift to make a lasting difference to older adults in the local area.
What began as a small initiative focused on one-to-one home visits has grown significantly over the years. Thanks to the dedication of our volunteers and community support, we have expanded our reach to meet the diverse needs of older people in Motherwell
Our Commitment to Quality & Continual Development
At Befriend Motherwell, we are dedicated to providing the highest standard of care, support, and safety for our community.
In 2019, we achieved the Quality in Befriending (QiB) award—the only national quality standard designed specifically for befriending services across the UK. Driven by our commitment to continuous improvement, we aimed even higher and achieved the prestigious QiB Excellence Award in 2020.
To maintain this benchmark, accredited organisations undergo a rigorous re-assessment every three years. We are proud to share that in Summer 2026, Befriend Motherwell successfully passed its latest re-accreditation, retaining the QiB Excellence Award.
This recognition reflects the ongoing dedication of our team and volunteers to deliver a safe, high-quality, and impactful service for older adults across Motherwell.
