Become a Volunteer
If you have a bit of free time and want to make a real difference in your local community, we would love to hear from you!
Our volunteers are the heart of Befriend Motherwell. Quite simply, our organisation could not exist without their warmth, dedication, and support.
Volunteering Opportunities
Our primary role is One-to-One Befriending, where you are matched with an older adult in the local community for regular visits, chats, and companionship.
How to Apply: Step-by-Step
1.Get in Touch & Apply: Tell us a bit about yourself.
Fill out our simple volunteer application form. This covers your basic details, personal interests (to help us make a great match), character references, and any health conditions or extra support needs we should be aware of.
2.Checks & References: Keeping our community safe.
We will follow up with your character references. Because you will be supporting vulnerable older adults, volunteers are required to join the PVG (Protection of Vulnerable Groups) scheme.
Note: There is no cost to you for applying for the PVG scheme—we cover all fees.
3.Volunteer Training Day: Equipping you for the role.
Once your application, references, and PVG check are complete, you will be invited to a friendly training session. We’ll cover the core guidelines of befriending, answer your questions, and explain how our staff team supports you every step of the way.
4.Get Matched!: Start making a difference.
We’ll pair you with an older adult who shares similar interests, and you can begin your befriending journey!
Commitment Expectations
We ask that all new volunteers commit to a minimum of 6 months with us.
Building trust takes time. Consistency helps increase our participants' confidence in the service, creates a stable friendship, and ensures the wonderful bond you build has a lasting, positive impact.
